Hard fought win.

Abercarn were made to work hard by a well drilled Abergavenny side in an entertaining encounter that eventually saw the home side come home winners by 25 points to 7. The first half hour was a closely matched affair that saw both sides looking for weaknesses in the other. The first score came when centre Jack Davies offloaded to winger Andrew Fraser who cleverly kicked ahead, outpaced the defenders to score his fifth try of the season. Full back Jamie Baker kicked the conversion before being successful with a penalty and at half-time Abercarn led by 10 points to nil.

Five minutes into the second half, the home side moved further ahead following good interlinking between the forwards and threequarters and Baker crossed the whitewash in the corner. Abergavenny finally got on the scoreboard when they scored an excellent try under the posts only for Abercarn to move three further points ahead when Baker kicked his second penalty of the game. The visitors then began to dominate possession and territory and for 15 minutes began to pound the Abercarn line but they were unable to make their possession count because of the energy and solidarity of the home defense. The Abercarn pack's edge at scrums was finally rewarded when the referee awarded a penalty try that Baker duly converted. With minutes remaining Abercarn strove to secure a try bonus point but were denied when hooker Aaron Davies unluckily just put his foot into touch as he crossed the whitewash.

The Man of the Match award deservedly went to lock Mark Curtis. This Saturday Pencoed will be the visitors in the second round of the Cup.
