Under 9's Match Report Blackwood Home 8th March

With the Welfare declared unplayable by the WRU we played this home fixture against our close rivals Blackwood up at Pantside. After the tragic news of the local rugby legend Matthew J Watkins passing, the first and most important part of this fixture was to put the rugby into context and start with a minutes silence as a mark of respect for the local Dad, Husband and international rugby player. As Abercarn Mini & Junior section we send our sincere condolences to Matthews family.

Following the defeat at the start of the season we were eager to see how we had progressed but Blackwood were out of the blocks from the whistle with a couple of tries in quick succession. Abercarn tried to break down the Blackwood defence but they were as solid in defence as attack. The Emerald & Blacks took opportunities from deep, running the ball from behind their own line and making ground but were caught with last ditch tackles by the Blackwood defence. Abercarn scored two consolation tries but leaked 15 to a well drilled Blackwood outfit.

Four boys put their hand up for MOM this week but it was deservedly awarded to Alex Richardson for his solid tackling and positive attitude, to never give up and keep trying to the final whistle. Well done Alex!!!
