Two from two.

Abercarn maintained their perfect start to the season with a hard fought 26 - 17 win away to Cwmbran. Playing down the slope the visitors pack had the home side under a lot of pressure, particularly in the scrums, but poor discipline meant that they often lost good attacking positions and allowed Cwmbran to move back up the pitch. There were two missed penalty kicks by the home side before the game was held up following a nasty injury to a Cwmbran player. Immediately from the restart, full-back Jamie Baker showed that he had brought his kicking boots by converting his first penalty of the game. Showing good patience Abercarn began to play to their strengths and following a scrum number 8 Gareth Peebles broke from the back, sent out a quick pass and winger Aled Brown sprinted over in the corner. With the last move of the first half Baker kicked his second penalty to give the visitors the lead of 11 points to nil.

Any thoughts that Cwmbran would wilt under the pressure was quickly dismissed when immediately from the kick-off they were awarded a penalty and minutes later their scrum-half cleverly chipped the ball to score a converted try and Abercarn's lead was reduced to one point in just five minutes. However, the visitors regained control of the game and Baker was successful with his third penalty kick before winger Andrew Fraser finished superbly and outpaced the defenders for his second try of the season. Baker continued to have a positive influence on the game and he linked well with scrum-half Rhys Morgan who jinked passed several Cwmbran players before adding the two points. Abercarn began to chase their fourth try and the bonus point but were unable to break through. It was Cwmbran who had the last say when they scored their second converted try and the referees whistle brought an end to the match.

This Saturday Abercarn entertain Garndiffaith who are also unbeaten in the League, so it is certain to be a close fought encounter.
