Abercarn kicked-off their season with a victory as they battled passed Caldicot at a wet and wild Welfare Ground. Both sides struggled to get a handle on the atrocious conditions, but ultimately the home sides powerful pack did enough to see off the visitors, ultimately winning by 33 points to 13.
Despite being under the cosh for the first ten minutes Caldicot were the first on the scoreboard when they were awarded a penalty on their first excursion into the Abercarn half. Abercarn hit back following a driving maul and skipper Nathan Curtis powered over the line. They moved further ahead when a Caldicot attack broke down when they spilled the ball and scrum-half Gethin Patterson kicked ahead for winger Andrew Fraser to outpace the defenders to score an excellent try. Full back Jamie Baker added a further three points with a successful penalty and at half-time Abercarn led by 13 points to 3.
Caldicot started the second half strongly and were awarded a penalty immediately after the kick-off. Outside-half Josh Steer restored the points difference with a smartly taken drop goal and Baker pushed Abercarn further ahead with his second successful penalty kick. In deteriorating conditions Abercarn were camped on Caldicot's line and despite a determined defence number 8 Gareth Peebles finally broke through to score and fellow back-rower Ben Phillips secured the home sides bonus point when he crossed the whitewash. Caldicot were rewarded for their efforts when with the last move of the game they scored a try and an excellent conversation from the touch line took the final score to 33 points to 13.
Back at the Clubhouse the Man of the Match award went to flanker Greg Baker. This Saturday Abercarn travel to Cwmbran.
