Abercarn's perfect start to the season continued as they celebrated their second emphatic bonus point win after they blew away Talywain with a devastating attacking display. They outscored the hosts by seven converted tries to one to remain top of the table. From an attacking scrum, flanker Sean Higgins broke away, stretched over the whitewash and outside-half Josh Steer successfully kicked the conversion. Talywain were awarded a penalty for a late tackle before scrum-half Colin Manning in Man-of-the-Match form scored his first try of the season. Higgins scored his second try when he sped past several defenders and following Steers conversion both players left the pitch after picking up injuries. The half-time score showed Abercarn leading by 21 points to 3.
The Talywain forwards were able to win a lot of ball but having been under pressure second row Mark Curtis intercepted a pass on his own 20 meter line, passed onto back rower Greg Baker who drew several defenders before shifting the ball onto winger Aled Brown who touched down under the posts. The hosts hit back immediately following a good flowing move to score a converted try. Winger Andrew Fraser showed his pace and sidestepping abilities to score Abercarn's fifth try before showing slick hands to lay on another for number 9 Rhys Morgan. Abercarn kept the hosts on the back foot and back rower Ben Phillips crashed through a number of defenders to score the seventh try. Replacement outside-half Jamie Baker was successful with his fourth conversion and the referees whistle ended the game.
This was Abercarn's best game of the season with an outstanding display by both backs and threequarters alike. This Saturday we welcome Pontypool United to the Welfare Ground which will be a tough encounter.
