Abercarn were knocked out of the Cup narrowly losing to visitors Aberdare by 21 points to 22. Whilst the home side had the edge in the scrums, Aberdare were quicker around the park, efficient at rucks and mauls and were able to limit Abercarn's access to the ball.
For the first thirty minutes Abercarn found it difficult to get out of their half and the visitors opened the scoring when they scored a try in the corner. Immediately from the drop out, centre Jack Davies received a pass, danced through a couple of attempted tackles before touching down under the posts and outside half Jamie Baker duly added the extras. The home side were enjoying their best period of the game when Davies again burst through several tackles before giving a try scoring pass to winger Nicky Lloyd. Bakers conversion gave Abercarn a 14 point to 7 lead with half time approaching. However, they paid a heavy price before the interval when they lost two players to the bin following infringements at breakdowns.
From the restart it took less than two minutes for Aberdare to make the most of their numerical advantage, and aided by poor tackling were able to score under the posts to level the scores. They moved further ahead when, again, weak tackling resulted in an unconverted try. Centre Davies regained the lead for Abercarn when he scored his second try of the game and Bakers conversion was the difference between the two sides. Aberdare had the final word however when they kicked a penalty that enabled them to progress onto the semi finals.
Back at the clubhouse the Man of the Match award was shared by Jack Davies and flanker Jordan Richards. This Saturday Oakdale are the visitors to the Welfare Ground and the coaches will certainly be concerned about the poor tackling display in the game as well as the number of penalties being given away.
